It’s All Who You Know: Hilfiger Wins Award
This weekend, in his 25th year in operation Mr. Tommy Hilfiger scored Pratt Institute’s Legend Award. The Legend Award honors iconic members of the art and design world,and industry where it is all about who you know. It is no secret that within the business of fashion and art “networking”, aka social climbing play a huge role in ones sucess. Tommy Hilfiger recalls his victory night to be extremely fun and stated how “its all about the people you surround yourself with”. Now, this a tip that we are given when we are young, from parents encouraging you to hang out with an appropriate crowd. However, this phrase gains a whole new meaning when one enters the professionally personal world of fashion where your success and opportunities really are “all about the people you surround yourself with” as Hilfiger mentioned. This is not to diss in anyway the act of networking, because I certainly find it to be necessary, its almost a test-those who can make it in the party and social scene of the industry are often the ones who pull through behind the desk or design table. Back to the award, his party sounded absolutely fabulous with cool music by Rosanne Cash (yes, that Johnny’s daughter)… the connections continue. Congrats Tommy, you passed the test of the fashion scene and have reached a point where you are one the newbies want to get to know, no longer the one trying to get in the door. Thats admirable enough, before we even dive into his iconic work (the actual art…)
